Some Thoughts on the Beginning Class
by Scott

During the past summer, the advanced class and the instructors met to determine methods to overcome the obstacles created by the club's move to Blomquist. One of the major concerns was recruiting and developing beginner students. This past quarter, the club demo yielded its typical number of beginner students. By the second week, the class was half of the original size. Despite the loss of twenty students, the beginner class distinguished itself in many significant ways. The same core group of approximately sixteen students committed themselves to attending the typical Tuesday/Thursday classes. In addition, they also began attending Saturday workouts to improve their techniques. The results were very impressive. Prior to Thanksgiving, the beginner class had covered all of the material typically covered in the class. The instructors determined that the best way to continue their development, and in hopes of retaining a higher percentage of students, was to integrate the beginner class with the advanced class upon their return from Thanksgiving break. Another objective for combining the class was to reduce the intimidation factor of joining the advanced class. The current advancde class consists mostly of brown and green belt students. By integrating the classes, the beginners could get to know the advanced students, and develop some rapport with them prior to Christmas. So far, it has been successful. We had a strong beginner turn out at the last exam and post luncheon. After the exam, the beginner students began working on their own tests with the advanced students. This is significant, because the beginner class currently outnumbers the advanced class by a two to one ratio. With the current beginner class, we have some strong, young students who we hope will make the commitment to continue their development. Since I began attending the club, I do not remember a class a strong as the fall quarter of 2001.
